Dunkirk, NY (WKBW-TV) - New York State Highway and Traffic law states that it is illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to operate a motorized wheelchair, leaving some in Dunkirk outraged.

Last week City of Dunkirk Police sent out a release after being urged by the Common Council Public Safety Committee.

The release outlined the rules and regulations in Article 34-C of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.

"We definitely sympathize and understand concerns," Anthony Dolce, City of Dunkirk Mayor said. "I've said it a few times but we're just looking to ensure public safety".

But not all residents are satisfied, like Calista Oiden, who has a daughter in a wheelchair.

"My daughter's best friend is 12 years old and that is her means of mobility," said Oiden. "How is she supposed to get around?"

Police added that they don't intend on harnessing or bothering anyone using wheelchairs who appear to be underage, but want everyone to be safe as possible
