Atari Inc. said Monday it has appointed James Caparro president and chief executive officer, effective immediately.

The interactive game maker said Caparro, a board member since February 2002, assumes the chief executive duties from Bruno Bonnell, chairman and chief creative officer.

Atari said Caparro assumes overall executive management of Atari's global operations, while Bonnell will oversee Atari's creative direction and planning for "the next stages of technological advancement in gaming."

Caparro has previously been a CEO at three organizations: Warner Music Group's WEA; Universal Music's Island Def Jam Music Group; and PolyGram's PolyGram Group Distribution.
