A man wearing camouflage fatigues and carrying an assault rifle was charged Saturday with fatally shooting two women and a 7-year-old boy in their homes, police said.

James Trimble, 44, was charged with three counts of aggravated murder.

Police said Trimble shot and killed the two people he lived with — Renee Bauer, 42, and her son, Dakota Bauer — Friday night in his home. He then fired several shots at officers before entering another home and taking a woman hostage.

Hours later, officers entered the residence and found 22-year-old Sarah Positano shot to death and Trimble hiding, police said. No police officers were injured.

Authorities declined to release details, including how long the gunman held officers at bay or the nature of Trimble’s relationship with Renee Bauer.

Positano’s parents said police told them Trimble forced their daughter to call 911 before shooting her twice.

“To come in with a rifle and shoot a defenseless woman, he’s a coward,” said her mother, Susan Positano. “I won’t be happy until he’s dead.”
