Cardinal Health Inc., the second largest pharmaceutical distributor in the U.S., said Friday one of its units had received a subpoena from the office of New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer as part of an investigation into the wholesale pharmaceutical industry.

The company said in a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it is one of multiple parties that have received such subpoenas.

Cardinal believes Spitzer's office is conducting a broad industry inquiry that appears to focus on the secondary market within the wholesale pharmaceutical industry.

The company, which reported 2004 sales of $65 billion, plans to be fully responsive to the New York Attorney General's Office in its investigation, the filing said.

No additional details were provided in the filing.
