Gannett Co., the nation's largest newspaper publisher with flagship USA Today, on Friday said it acquired privately held PointRoll Inc., a Fort Washington, Pa.-based online advertising technology firm.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Gannett said PointRoll founder and Chief Executive Officer Jules Gardner is stepping down and Chief Operating Officer Chris Saridakis will take his place.

PointRoll's media technology boosts the performance and interactivity of online ad banners, email and streaming video in order to improve revenue.

Gannett publishes 101 daily newspapers, and owns more than 800 weekly and other publications in the U.S.
