Best TV Site by Editor & Publisher

MSNBC.com Beats Competitors in Nielsen’s for Third Consecutive Month

For Immediate Release (Redmond, WA)—MSNBC.com solidified its leadership status among news sites, rising to the top of Nielsen//NetRatings in March, April and May. The site has increased its audience numbers more than 11% in the past year alone, up to nearly 24 million users daily.  In addition to consumer appeal, MSNBC.com recently garnered industry accolades, including being named Best Journalism Site by the National Press Club for the second consecutive year.

Editor & Publisher also awarded MSNBC.com two of their prestigious “EPpy Awards” for Best Overall TV Site – beating out CNN.com and ESPN.com – and Best Special Feature in an Internet Service for MSNBC.com’s The Big Picture “Race in America”.  MSNBC.com plans to become even better.

“At MSNBC.com, our driving force is to provide the optimal consumer experience,” said Charlie Tillinghast, General Manager and Publisher of MSNBC.com. “For more than a decade, we have held a keen interest in discovering and delivering the news, interactive tools, and features that consumers desire. Our effort continues to be rewarded with an ever-increasing audience and a growing list of industry awards. Yet we’re still working hard to deliver even more.”

At the end of June, MSNBC.com will reward its 24 million consumers with a site redesign that includes new tools, an even easier to navigate home page and numerous small adjustments that will raise the bar for online news and information.  All changes were designed based on consumer feedback and with their interests in mind.  The site will also introduce a comprehensive content delivery process that will provide story relevance for every user.

“Our goal is to deliver the most relevant stories to our consumers each time they visit,” said Tillinghast.  “We’ve accessed the smartest minds in the business to implement technology that will sort through thousands of stories to unearth exactly what consumers want, when they want it.”

With content from the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, Dateline, Meet the Press, and MSNBC TV, MSNBC.com provides in-depth coverage.   In collaboration with these high caliber news partners, MSNBC.com also offers free video of live news events and breaking news footage.

“While our competitors are racing to catch up to us in innovations like streaming video, MSNBC.com is well ahead of the game and being recognized accordingly,” continued Tillinghast. “These improvements will ensure MSNBC.com remains a top news site.  It is this commitment to the consumer that allows us to be honored not only for our overall performance, but also for individual examples of journalistic excellence, including original journalism and interactive storytelling.”

In addition to the two previously mentioned awards, MSNBC.com has recently been recognized with the following industry honors:

National Press Photographers Association “Best Multimedia Package” – third place for The Year in Pictures http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6687413/ National Press Photographers Association “Best Feature Picture Stories” – honorable mention for Wounded in the Line of Duty http://msnbc.com/modules/flash_mediateam/ps_050121_warAfter/ Society for News Design “Best of New Media” – monthly winner for The Big Picture: the Academy Awards http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6970010/

MSNBC.com has a history of innovation in journalism, having developed and improved upon a business model that keeps consumers interested, maintains profitability and upholds journalistic integrity.  The site was the first major online news organization to offer broad scale streaming video, and is the only top news site to maintain fully free video.  The site’s ongoing status as the #1 news site according to Nielsen//NetRatings indicates that more consumers turn to MSNBC.com for their online news and information needs.
