A tour bus and a pickup truck collided Saturday on a highway in southwest Arkansas, injuring 31 people.

Authorities were unable to say how serious the injuries were. There were 45 people on the bus, state police said.

The northbound pickup swerved across the center line and hit the bus head-on, police said. The crash happened on U.S. Highway 71, about 150 miles southwest of Little Rock and 3 miles north of the Louisiana state line.

The bus was carrying members of a church youth group that was returning to Baton Rouge, La., from a trip to Tulsa, Okla. Both drivers were flown to hospitals.

The northbound pickup swerved across the center line and hit the Dixieland tour bus head-on, sending the bus into a ditch, Sgt. Bill Fuller told the Texarkana Gazette.

The pickup driver and bus driver were the most seriously injured and were both flown to hospitals.

“For a scene that should have been chaotic, it was quite calm under the circumstances,” said police investigator William Davidson.

Davidson said he ordered a blood analysis on the pickup driver but declined to release his name.

The collision happened less than 2 miles from the site where another tour bus collided with an oncoming car July 15, killing two people.
