An 8-year-old girl died and at least three other children were injured Wednesday when a tree fell on them at a Boy Scout camp, authorities said.

The accident occurred at the Joseph A. Citta Scout Reservation.

Police Chief Kenneth Flatt said the girl who killed when a 30-foot oak tree fell. It was not immediately clear why the girl was at the camp or whether the other three children were Scouts.

Joyce McFadden, a spokeswoman for Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin, said four children were brought to the emergency room. The conditions of the surviving children were not immediately available.

The death was the latest in series of tragedies involving scouting-related activities this summer.

Four adult Scout leaders were killed in a July electrical accident in Bowling Green, Va. Five other people have died this summer from drowning and lightning during Scout outings in Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah and California.
