Former President Boris Yeltsin underwent a hip operation Thursday at a Moscow hospital, a Russian news agency reported Thursday, a day after he fell and broke his leg on the Italian island of Sardinia.

The Interfax news agency cited Yeltsin’s spokesman Vladimir Shevchenko as saying doctors had operated on the 74-year-old former president. The report could not immediately be confirmed and Shevchenko could be not be reached for comment.
