Smoke was detected in the cabin of a United Airlines flight from Tokyo to Los Angeles on Friday, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Tokyo, an official said.

No injuries were reported.

The smoke appeared about an hour after United Airlines flight 890 took off from Narita airport in Tokyo, and the pilot requested permission to make an emergency landing, said Atsushi Ohira, a Narita spokesman.

The plane landed at about 6:20 p.m. local time and no injuries were reported, said Taku Sanbe, another Narita spokesman.

He did not know how many people were on the plane.
