MTP ICYMI: Reince on Muslim Ban, Sanders on Fighting Bigotry

ICYMI: Here’s what happened on Meet the Press today

ICYMI: Here’s what happened on Meet the Press today

Incoming White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus appeared on the show...

· ON A MUSLIM REGISTRY:

o “I'm not going to rule out anything. But I we're not going to have a registry based on a religion. But what I think what we're trying to do is say that there are some people, certainly not all people, Chuck, there are some people that are radicalized and there are some people that have to be prevented from coming into this country. And Donald Trump's position, President Trump's position is consistent with bills in the House and the Senate that say the following: "If you want to come from a place or an area around the world that harbors and trains terrorists, we have to temporarily suspend that operation until a better vetting system is put in place." And when that happens, when a better vetting system is put in place, then those radical folks, or excuse me, they will not be allowed in, but then others will be allowed in. But only until that is done.”

· ON WSJ EDITORIAL ON LIQUIDATING SHARES IN TRUMP ORGANIZATION:

o “Look, we're looking at this right now Chuck, as well. And like I said before, we're going to make sure that no matter what decisions are made, that they're going to be run through counsel. And as you know, there's a White House Counsel's office that will be there, that will be there, that will be issuing opinions and these matters will all be dealt with, they'll all be dealt with accordingly.”

Chuck talked with newly minted Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)

· ON PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP:

o “I hope that President Trump will rise to the occasion. And when he does, we'll try to be supportive. But when he doesn't, we'll use everything we've got to oppose him.”

· ON SCOTUS:

o “If he doesn't nominate a mainstream candidate, we're going to go at him with everything we have, or her. Go at the candidate with everything we've got because this is so, so important. Now, you know, Senator McConnell has said, ‘Let's not use the filibuster.’ But they don't come with clean hands, having delayed Merrick Garland for a whole year.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) joined the show from Miami.

· ON PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP:

o “He has said outrageous things and he needs to apologize to the American people. There are people all over this country who are really frightened.”

Obama Voters in '12, Trump Voters in '16

Chuck traveled to the epicenter of the Obama-to-Trump phenomenon – Macomb County, Michigan – right outside of Detroit. It’s a blue-collar, middle-class county, made famous by Reagan Democrats in the ‘80s. Macomb is just one of 225 Obama-to-Trump counties nationwide, many of them stretching across the Midwest. Chuck talked to some voters in Macomb:

o “Obama didn't necessarily disappoint me, I guess, he didn't fulfill everything that I wanted.”

o “We want a change. Okay, we had to get out of the Bush administration and what had been going on in there, we were told lies.”

o “What made me vote for him is the fact that I believe that Hillary Clinton was a criminal.”

o “I just hear people saying, ‘Well, he's a billionaire now. He can't be bought.’ That's what people are saying. They can't control him.”

o “He came three miles north of here, 12 miles. I think a lot of people feel like she took it for granted. Like, it has always been a blue state and that she had it in her back pocket.”
