Should kids wear helmets for sledding?

Dec. 28, 2010 at 11:00 AM ET

Snow across much of the country means it's time for kids to grab their sleds and hit the slopes. But a recent study found that sledding injuries send almost 21,000 children to emergency rooms each year. Of those, 9 percent suffered traumatic brain injuries -- pretty scary.

Other activities cause more injuries -- skateboarding, for instance, injures 61,000 children a year. But when you consider that sledding only happens a few days a year, 21,000 ER visits is a lot.

Safety experts and some parents say that kids should wear helmets while sledding. What do you think?
