Rejecting objections by both the prosecution and the defense, a judge ruled Tuesday that video will be allowed when James Eagan Holmes goes on trial in the killings of 12 people in a Colorado movie theater. Attorneys for Holmes, 27, who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the shooting spree in Aurora in July 2012, argued that transmitting video of the trial would jeopardize his rights, while prosecutors said doing so would unnecessarily expose the 70 victims who survived the shooting to further trauma.
State District Judge Carlos Samour disagreed on both counts, but he didn't give media organizations everything they asked for. The trial will be transmitted only through a single remote-controlled security camera that Samour will be able to turn off at any time, and it will show only the witness stand and the attorneys' podium, he ruled. Jury selection is expected to begin sometime in December.
