1. Chattanooga Gunman Was Not on Terrorism Radar: Officials

Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, 24, was identified as the shooter who opened fire on two military centers in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Thursday, killing four Marines and critically wounding a Navy sailor. But officials told NBC News that he was not in any federal terrorism database and was not under investigation before he carried out the rampage. A motive remains unclear, and authorities have yet to say whether Abdulazeez, who had several weapons, was killed by police or if he killed himself. Read more in NEWS.

2. ‘Heroic Action’ Saved Lives in Chattanooga Tragedy

"Heroic action" by the Marines shot dead in Chattanooga and local police prevented an even greater tragedy, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said Thursday as the FBI began an investigation into the killings. "All of our hearts go out to the families of the four marines who lost their lives," he told reporters. 3. Sentencing Phase Next After James Holmes Found Guilty

Families of the 12 people killed by the Aurora theater shooter and the scores he injured during that massacre in 2012 were relieved that jurors only needed 12 hours to reject the idea that Holmes was legally insane when he opened fire. 4. Obama Visits Federal Prison in Push for Reform

President Barack Obama went behind bars on Thursday — extending his campaign for reform in the criminal justice system — becoming the first sitting president to see the inside a federal prison first hand. 5. Questions Persist One Year After MH17 Crash

Residents of the Ukrainian village where a Malaysian airliner was shot down with 298 people aboard a year ago began a procession to the crash site on Friday. The ceremony came amid an escalating war of words over who was responsible for destroying the plane. Read more in NEWS.

6. Mysterious ‘Suicide’ of Woman in Jail Under Scrutiny

The family of Sandra Bland, 28, found dead in a Texas jail say it's "unfathomable" that she would have killed herself following a routine traffic stop, and want more information from investigators who ruled her death a suicide. But officials said late Thursday that a video had surfaced on social media in March, purportedly of Bland diagnosing herself with depression and PTSD. Read more in NEWS.

7. ‘Miracle’ Teen Speaks Out on Surviving Plane Crash

Autumn Veatch, who was found alive days after a plane crash in the wilderness of Washington state, told NBC News that she has a newfound respect for life. Her step-grandparents were killed in the accident, and the 16-year-old described how she fought her way from the burning wreckage to find safety. Read more in NEWS.
