Good morning, and happy Tuesday! Here are some of the stories we’re following today:

1. Oscar Pistorius sentenced to prison time

The South African sprinter was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison. Prosecutors had asked for a 10-year sentence after Pistorius' conviction for culpable homicide — the equivalent of manslaughter — in the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year. The judge said that no prison time would have sent “the wrong message to the community,” but a long sentence “would also not be appropriate.” In a news conference following the sentencing, Pistorius’ family said they accept the judgment and asked for privacy. 2. CDC issues new guidelines in Ebola battle

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidelines late Monday for how healthcare workers must handle the virus. The “enhanced guidance” includes ensuring healthcare workers undergo rigorous training with personal protective equipment and that there is no skin exposed when such equipment is worn. Across the country Tuesday, healthcare workers are being trained in these new guidelines. The question remains, however, whether the U.S. is adequately prepared for an Ebola outbreak. 3. Hannah Graham suspect charged in rape in separate case

Jesse Matthew, who’s accused of abducting the University of Virginia student, was indicted Monday in a separate 2005 rape case in Fairfax County, Virginia. Prosecutors there have asked for a bench warrant. Matthew remains locked up in Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail in the disappearance of 18-year-old Graham. Meanwhile, human remains found Saturday in the search for Graham were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for positive identification. Read more in NEWS.

4. Police arrest suspected Indiana serial killer

Darren Deon Vann, a 43-year-old convicted sex offender, was arrested in the slayings of seven women whose bodies were found Friday and Saturday in Lake County, police said. Investigators say he confessed to the murders and might also be responsible for other deaths dating back to the 1990s. The police departments of Hammond and Gary are seeking murder charges. 5. Fashion icon Oscar de la Renta dies at 82

The legendary fashion designer, who dressed countless brides and celebrities, died at his home in Connecticut. He made a name for himself by dressing First Lady Jackie Kennedy, and at the end of his prolific career was in the spotlight for designing Amal Clooney’s wedding dress. No cause of death was specified. “While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us. Oscar’s hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company,” his family said in a statement. Read more in POP CULTURE.

6. Play ball! World Series to kick off in Kansas City

The Kansas City Royals will host the San Francisco Giants in Game 1, with the first pitch set for 8:07 p.m. ET at Kauffman Stadium. The last time the Royals were in the World Series and won was 29 years ago, while this will be the third appearance by the Giants since 2010. The Giants, the National League champs, won the title that year as well as in 2012. Read more at NBC SPORTS.
