1. One Garland gunman was on FBI’s radar
Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi were identified as the gunmen who opened fire Sunday night at a contest to draw cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in Texas. Simpson was known to the FBI and was convicted of lying to federal agents five years ago about plans to travel to Africa. Soofi, his roommate, the son of a Texas mother and Pakistani father, attended the International School in Islamabad, where one former student remembered him as "a really nice kid." Read more in NEWS.
2. ISIS claims responsibility for Garland shooting
Charlie Winter, an NBC News counterterrorism consultant, confirmed that ISIS said in an official radio broadcast Tuesday that two of its "soldiers" had carried out the attack in Texas. The militant group did not provide evidence to support its claim. Read more in NEWS.
3. Clinton leads in 2016 poll, despite hits to image
Despite controversy over her use of personal email and donations to the Clinton foundation, Hillary Clinton trumps top-tier Republican candidates in hypothetical general election matchups, according to a NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. Her popularity hasn't wavered among Democrats. But her unfavorable rating has ticked up six percentage points since March. Read more in POLITICS.
4. Attorney General Loretta Lynch heads to Baltimore
On the job little more than a week, Attorney General Loretta Lynch will visit Baltimore in the wake of protests and riots over the death of Freddie Gray. Lynch plans to meet with city officials, members of Congress, law enforcement officials and community leaders. Read more in NEWS.
5. Majority wants Supreme Court to OK same-sex marriage nationally
Fifty-eight percent of Americans say the Supreme Court should legalize gay marriage nationwide, according to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. The Supreme Court heard arguments last week. A decision is expected in late June. Read more in NEWS.
6. John Kerry becomes first secretary of state to visit Somalia
John Kerry made an unannounced visit to Somalia on Tuesday, becoming first U.S. secretary of state to travel to the African country, which is home to the al Qaeda-linked terror group al Shabab. The State Department said Kerry's visit was "to reinforce the United States commitment to supporting Somalia's ongoing transition to a peaceful democracy." Read more in NEWS.
7. Sheryl Sandberg’s husband died after workout
David Goldberg, a technology executive and the husband of Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, died after collapsing at a gym in Mexico. Goldberg, 47, was found lying next to a treadmill with a 3-millimeter head wound. He died in a hospital of severe head trauma and severe loss of blood. Read more in NEWS.
Nightly Spotlight
Freddie Gray's mother, Gloria Darden, told Nightly News' Lester Holt that she "will never be the same" after her son died a week following his arrest last month. But his family is encouraged that charges have been brought against the six Baltimore police officers involved in the arrest.
