Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa has created dance performances around the world, and she can now add the acclaimed New York City Ballet to her impressive list.
Lopez Ochoa helped open the NYCB fall 2016 season Tuesday with her piece "Unframed," which is her ballet and fashion collaboration with designer Rosie Assoulin.
Lopez Ochoa said though the music in her piece might not specifically be a Latin genre, she incorporates the "chispa" or spark and dynamism that is an integral part of her dance style and choreography.

"The older I get the more Latina I feel," Lopez Ochoa said. "I grew up in Belgium, I grew up in France, but I learned Spanish only seven years ago. It is like an acceptance as you grow older to accept that you are a cocktail and that cannot be defined by one thing."
After her time with the NYCB, Lopez Ochoa will choreograph her sixth performance for the Ballet Hispánico, a New York City-based ballet company which performs at venues like the Apollo theater in Harlem. She has also been working in Cuba.
