First Lady's Carolina Herrera Dress A Smash At State Dinner

Carolina Herrera, born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, designed the liberty blue and black lace dress worn by First Lady Michelle Obama at the state dinner in honor of French President Francois Holland.

While Herrera told NBC Latino during one of her fashion shows that "fashion is always new - it has to be," the designer is known for her timeless and elegant style, and has been a favorite of first ladies and celebrities during her more than three decades in the fashion world.

Herrera received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 and the Fashion Group International Superstar Award in 2012.
