After winning a Golden Globe for his performance in the Amazon series "Mozart in the Jungle," Mexican actor Gael García Bernal has a new thriller, "Desierto" that tackles the issue of border crossings and migration.
The movie follows the story of a father crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to visit his son in the United States. He crosses paths with a vigilante hunting migrants in the desert.
García Bernal's character struggles to survive and fight the vigilante, working to save his life to see his son once more.
"We have been dealing with this subject, this phenomenon, of migration," García Bernal said. He said that while the events in the movie may not be a common threat faced by those crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, the narrative shines a light on the struggles that refugees face.
"The timely reason is because there is such an elevation throughout the world — not only in the United States, but throughout the world — of hate speech and demonization hate towards immigrants in general."
