With just two seconds to spare, a Latino cop saved a man laying on train tracks from losing his life Friday.
In a harrowing video, NJ Transit police officer Victor Ortiz responded to calls that a man was lying on the train tracks in Secaucus. As the train's light approached, Ortiz jumped into the tracks to pull the uncooperative man to safety.
"I was racing for the worst, you know, but hoping for the best," Ortiz told Tamron Hall on TODAY. "In my mind I was like, ‘This is not going to happen because I am here. I am going to do what I can do pull this guy through.’”
The man’s identity and condition have not been released. Officer Ortiz is a 16-year veteran of the transit force.
"If that last pull had not worked, we already know what would have happened," said the married father of a 13-year-old girl. "Had I just stood there and done nothing? Again, I would not have been able to bear it."
