At least one passenger is dead and 44 others have been sent to local hospitals after a Pennsylvania bus crashed with a tractor trailer, NBC News affiliate WBRE reported.

Fifty people were on the Greyhound bus that crashed at about 1:40 a.m. local time, according to the station, as it traveled from New York City to Cleveland, Ohio.

A woman was killed the crash, and four others are listed in critical condition.

Forty-five of the 50 people aboard the bus, including the driver, were taken to five hospitals, Greyhound spokeswoman Alexandra Pedrini said. The bus driver, who was not identified, has been with the company for more than 12 years, she said.

A New Jersey man who identified himself as the driver of the tractor trailer told local newspaper The Daily Item that he was traveling the speed limit when he was rammed from behind by the bus.

Akos Gubica, 36, told the paper that he did not know why the bus struck his tractor trailer. He was uninjured.

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Penn., took in 17 patients, four of whom were in critical condition, according to the center’s media Twitter account. Four of the patients were treated and released by late morning on Wednesday, according to the center.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
