A cousin charged with helping former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez cover up the killing of a semipro football player was granted bail Thursday in a Massachusetts court.
Bristol County Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh set cash bail at $15,000 for Tanya Singleton, 37, of Bristol. She had been held without bond since last month when she pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal contempt of court and of being an accessory to murder after the fact in the June 17 shooting Odin Lloyd.
Hernandez pleaded not guilty in August to one count of murder and five gun-related counts after Lloyd's body was found in an industrial park near Hernandez's home. Lloyd, 27, who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée, died of multiple gunshot wounds to his back and chest.
Singleton is accused of having helped another alleged accessory, Ernest Wallace, escape to Florida after Lloyd's killing by buying him a bus ticket after her car broke down in Georgia, prosecutors said.
The contempt charge arose from Singleton's refusal to testify before the grand jury investigating Hernandez — even though she'd been offered immunity, according to prosecutors who asked for $100,000 bail.
Singleton's next hearing was set for Dec. 5. If she posts bail, she will have to wear a GPS monitoring device and will be barred from leaving Bristol Count, Garsh said.
Besides Singleton and Wallace, a third person, Carlos Ortiz, 27 — who allegedly told police he saw Hernandez with the victim the night of the killing — has also been charged with being an accessory.
And Hernandez's fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, 24, has been charged with perjury for allegedly lying to the grand jury.
All have pleaded not guilty.
Meanwhile, Hernandez remains the subject of two other investigations: a 2012 drive-by shooting in Boston that left two immigrants dead and a February incident in Miami in which Alexander Bradley lost an eye. Bradley, who has filed a civil suit, claims Hernandez shot him after they left a strip club.
