A 70-year-old convicted robber who escaped from California prison in 1977 has been caught 36 years later and some 1,600 miles away, federal authorities said.
Michael Ray Morrow was arrested Monday in Jessieville, Ark., the FBI said.
He had been wanted following his August, 27, 1977, escape from the California Institute for Men Facility in Chino, where he had been serving time for armed robbery at the time of his escape.
In 1973, Morrow had been sentenced to "5 years to life" or "10 year minimum," authorities said in an affidavit.
According to the FBI, investigators were able to match Morrow's fingerprints to those of a man using the name Carl Frank Wilson. Those fingerprints were taken when "Wilson" was arrested by the Saline County Sheriff’s Department in 1984.
The FBI said the investigation showed Wilson was in fact Morrow.
Morrow is currently in an Arkansas jail, awaiting extradition to California.
