Police shoot, injure man at Milwaukee children's hospital

Police shot and wounded an armed man at a Wisconsin children's hospital Thursday, the Milwaukee County Sheriff said.

Milwaukee police officers had gone to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin to serve a felony possession of a firearm warrant to Ashanti Hendricks, 22, after they learned he was inside the facility, Sheriff David Clarke said at a Thursday afternoon news conference.

Authorities discovered Hendricks in the neo-natal progressive care unit holding a baby shortly before noon. When officers told him he was under arrest, he put the baby down and "appeared to be cooperating" — but then ran down the hall, Clarke said.

When police saw Hendricks brandish a handgun, they fired their weapons and struck him, according to Clarke.

He is being treated for a non-life threatening injury at Froedtert Hospital & The Medical College of Wisconsin, both of which are connected to Children's Hospital, according to NBCChicago.com. Police said Hendricks has a lengthy arrest record.

Clarke added that no one else at the hospital — the baby, the baby's mother, police, or hospital personnel — was injured.

"This is not a situation where a guy came in to shoot somebody," Clarke said.

Authorities recovered the Hendricks' handgun, according to Clarke.

The facility in the west suburb of Wauwatosa was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon due to the incident, the hospital said via Twitter. The building "remains locked down until law enforcement issues a complete all-clear," the hospital said in a subsequent post.

According to its website, the hospital is one of the busiest pediatric facilities in the country and treated upwards of 350,000 patients in 2011.
