Thursday on "Nightly News," we took a look back at John F. Kennedy's 1963 journey from Andrews Air Force Base to Dallas, and the memorable moments that transpired shortly before his assassination.

At a breakfast gathering in Fort Worth on the morning of November 22, the President was given a Stetson for "some protection against the rain." President Kennedy did not wear hats, although he donned a top hat at his inauguration long enough to tip it to his father.

Despite encouragement from the crowd in Texas, Kennedy did not put the hat on, saying, “I’ll put it on in the White House on Monday. If you come up there, you’ll have a chance to see it then.”

Monday was Kennedy’s funeral.
