Two shot dead at seniors' housing complex after lovers' argument: cops

A resident at a housing complex for senior citizens shot dead two women whom he blamed for the breakup of his relationship, according to Detroit police.

Alleged gunman Mike Reda, 65, opened fire after an argument with his girlfriend, police told The Associated Press.

Reda had been drinking before the shooting, a witness told NBC station WDIV. He was armed with an assault rifle.

All those involved were residents of the 80-apartment Pablo Davis Elder Living Center in southwest Detroit.

Reda shot the first woman, who was aged in her 50s, while she sat on a bench outside the complex, police spokeswoman Kelly Miner told the Associated Press. Reda allegedly then went back inside and shot the second woman, who was aged in her 60s.

The first woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, the second died at the scene, police said.

“He came outside with an assault rifle and told me to get on my hands and knees and pray,” one resident told WDIV at the scene.

“I did get on my hands and knees and pray. Then he told me to get up and as I got up he swung his assault rifle toward my friend and shot her.”

Reda initially barricaded himself in his room, WDIV reported. However, when police arrived and surrounded the building, he surrendered and was taken into custody, The Associated Press said.
