Patrick Kane, a star of the NHL's Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks, is being investigated for a rape allegation in his offseason hometown near Buffalo, New York, the Buffalo News and NBC affiliate WGRZ reported, citing unnamed law enforcement sources.
NBC News has not independently confirmed the allegation, and Kane has not been charged with any crime.
Kane, a 26-year-old forward, was a key figure in the Blackhawks' winning of the NHL title two months ago. He was scheduled to take the trophy to a bar in the town of Hamburg this weekend.
Hamburg Police Chief Gregory Wickett said little of the case in a quick press briefing Friday morning. He confirmed that his department was "investigating an incident that allegedly occurred" at Kane's home last week, and was "gathering evidence" and "awaiting forensic results."
Wickett declined to answer questions or provide details.
Both the Blackhawks and the NHL have said in statements this week that they were aware of the case, but they did not comment further.
