A highway running through Minnesota was closed down for hours Friday after icy and snowy road conditions caused a pileup involving up to 50 vehicles including semi-trucks.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said “multiple crashes” caused the closure of the North-bound lane of I-35 in Lakeville, Minn.

Traffic cameras showed as many as 50 cars and trucks piled up on and near a bridge, NBC affiliate KARE reported. More than a dozen vehicles were stranded in the median and on the shoulder of the highway.

Two hours after the crash, Minnesota DOT said in a tweet that the highway had reopened, but warned additional car accidents had built up in the same area.

At least two inches of snow accumulated in Lakeville on Friday, on top of icy conditions caused by negative temperatures overnight, according to Weather.com.
