A shark bit and "significantly injured" a 9-year-old boy playing in waist deep waters on the Florida Coast Sunday, officials said.
The 9-year-old, who has not been identified, was bitten on his right calf while in the water at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach, about 60 miles east of Orlando, said Brevard County Fire and Rescue spokesman Don Walker.
The bull shark, which was at least 5 feet long, left a "significant injury," on the boy's leg, Walker said. He was transported to an Orlando hospital, but his condition was unknown, Walker said.
Rescue crews evacuated beach-goers from the water for an hour to prevent other shark bites, according toNBC affiliate WESH.
