The escaped convict from Maine who had left an apology note behind before going on the run was caught Friday afternoon, authorities told NBC News. Tyler Malmstrom was apprehended around 4:30 p.m. in South Boston after leaving his minimum security prison more than two weeks ago, said Boston Police Department spokeswoman Neva Coakley. They were alerted to his possible whereabouts in the city four hours earlier by detectives from the Sanford Police Department in Maine. Malmstrom had warrants out for his arrest in Massachusetts in addition to the warrants he faced in Maine for escape and failure to appear on a domestic assault charge.
Malmstrom had escaped July 10 from the Maine Coastal Regional Re-entry Center, a minimum security facility located in Waldo County. After his escape, prison officials found that Malmstrom had left an apology note. The 23-year-old man was serving the last five months of his sentence stemming from an aggravated assault conviction.
