A Mississippi police officer was in critical condition Sunday after being shot in the head during an armed robbery call, authorities said.

Two suspects opened fire on Clarksdale Officer Derrick Couch after he responded to an armed robbery call at a convenience store Saturday night, according to Clarksdale police. Clarksdale Mayor Bill Luckett said Couch was found on the street with a gunshot wound to the head, according to NBC affiliate WMC.

The two suspects who stole money out of the store's register before shooting Couch had their faces covered and have not been identified, according to police — who said one of the robbers had a strange gait.

" Surveillance footage released by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations shows one of the suspects had a distinctive walk, and authorities are asking the public for assistance with their identification," police said in a statement.

Couch underwent surgery and is in critical condition, police said Sunday morning.
