A trip on Disney World’s iconic monorail turned into a frightening ride Sunday when it was reportedly struck by lightning and had to be evacuated, according to officials and passengers. The elevated train had to be evacuated at about 6 p.m., NBC affiliate WESH reported.
Reedy Creek Fire Department Assistant Chief Bo Jones told NBC News that rescue crews used a movable platform to rescue some of the around 120 passengers from the stricken train. Others in the forward cars used an escape hatch to get to the first car, which was near a staircase leading to the ground. The process took about 90 minutes, he said.
A Disney World spokesperson was looking into the incident Sunday night and couldn't immediately comment, according to WESH. There were no injuries, Jones said.
