Two D.C. Officers Shot at During Violent Chase, Attempted Carjacking

Suspects first fired at off-duty officer in SE D.C. then shot off-duty detective four times

Police are working to unravel the details of a violent night in the District and Prince George's County, during which a veteran detective suffered four gunshot wounds.

It all began just before 3 a.m. Wednesday near Suitland Parkway and Alabama Avenue SE when a burgundy issan Altima pulled up next to an off-duty D.C. police officer's car. According to a police report, someone in the Altima fired three shots at the officer's car, then fled the scene. The officer was not injured.

Next, the suspects in the Altima drove to Pennsylvania Avenue and Southern Avenue in Suitland, Maryland where they attempted to carjack a D.C. detective who has been with the force for 25 years.

"From this point, it does not appear the detective had a chance to fire back," D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Wednesday morning.

The detective was struck four times, but managed to pursue the suspects deeper into Prince George's County, then back into the District, where the Altima eventually crashed in the 5500 block of Hunt Place NE.

Three suspects then fled the scene, but police managed to track only one of them down and arrest him.

Romeo Hayes, 27, of Southwest is facing assault with intent to kill charges. The detective who was struck four times is expected to recover.

In all, the crime spree spanned about 5 miles.

If you saw a burgundy Nissan Altima with New York license plates in those areas, you are asked to call police at 202-727-9099. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
