Thousands of police officers converged Thursday on a Pennsylvania church for the funeral of a slain state trooper, who was mourned amid tight security while the alleged gunman continued to elude capture. Snipers perched on the rectory roof as colleagues and relatives paid tribute to Cpl. Bryon Dickson, who was shot while walking to his car during the shift change at the Blooming Grove barracks. A second trooper, Alex Douglass, was critically wounded while coming to Dickson's aid.

Capt. George Dingfelder of the Colorado State Patrol said he made the long trip to show support for law enforcement. "Killed for just being who he was," Dingfelder said of Dickson, adding that he wished he was involved in the manhunt for fugitive Eric Matthew Frein. "Every law enforcement agency on this side of the country would like to be involved," he said.

Frein, 31, remains at large, possibly holed up in the woods with high-powered rifles. A military-enactment buff with anti-government and anti-police leanings, Frein likely assumed the role of a Serbian soldier for his ambush, authorities said. He shaved both sides of his head, leaving a modified mohawk "in mental preparation to commit this cowardly act," Lt. Col. George Bevins said.

Frein's sister told NBC News that she is stunned by the allegations, saying he is "not a psycho." She added, "We're not trying to protect him. He has to suffer the consequences. But he's still our family...I don't know where he is or what he's doing. I hope it's a big misunderstanding."
