A rescuer fell to her death from a medical helicopter while trying to save a woman in Texas on Monday, officials said.
Forty-six-year-old Kristin McLain was a nurse with the Travis County STAR Flight — a 24-hour aerial emergency medical service, according to a post on the agency's Facebook page.
McLain was working to rescue a woman from an Austin hiking trail at about 10 p.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) when she fell from the aircraft’s hoist as the patient was being lifted into the chopper, NBC affiliate KXAN reported. The seven-year STAR Flight veteran was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman being rescued remained attached to the hoist and has been transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, KXAN reported. It said the National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the incident.
