Florida Man Identified as Pilot Killed in Small Plane Crash in Illinois

The plane suffered an undetermined mishap and crashed, torching the side of a home.

The pilot killed after a small plane crashed in a northern Illinois neighborhood and caused a home to catch fire on Thursday has been identified as a Florida man.

Garry T. Bernardo, 58, was identified through fingerprint comparison by the Will County Coroner's Office.

Bernardo, a resident of Lake Worth, Florida, was traveling alone in a Piper PA30 headed to Wisconsin at the time of the crash in Plainfield, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

The plane suffered an undetermined mishap and crashed, torching the side of a home.

Bernardo was pronounced dead at 2:58 p.m. local time. Preliminary autopsy findings indicate multiple injuries due to airplane mishap, according to the coroner's office. A final cause of death will be determined at a later date, pending police autopsy and toxicological reports.

No injuries were reported on the ground.

The National Transportation Safety Board says it might take nearly a year to determine the cause of the crash.
