Two Colgate University freshmen died in a plane crash in upstate New York on Sunday afternoon, according to officials.

Cathryn "Carey" Depuy and Ryan Adams, both 19, were killed when the aircraft they were flying in came down after taking off from Hamilton Municipal Airport, Colgate University said in a statement. Both students were from Ridgefield, Connecticut.

"The Colgate community is mourning," the university added, saying that counselling would be available for students affected by the tragedy.

Madison County fire and rescue responded to the scene — which was just a few miles from Hamilton Airport, according to CNYCentral.com.

Madison County 911 told the website that an eyewitness called in to report hearing a crash just after noon local time.

The Madison County Sheriff and Federal Aviation Administration investigators responded to the scene, the website reported. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
