Massachusetts authorities are appealing for the public’s help more than a week after the body of a young girl was found in Boston Harbor and remains unidentified.

The girl — who authorities believe is about 4 years old with brown hair, brown eyes and weighing 30 pounds — was discovered on June 25 by a woman walking a dog on Deer Island, state police said in a statement. Her remains were found inside a trash bag.

A post on the Massachusetts State Police's Facebook page, which includes a computer-generated image showing “what the child may have looked like in life,” has been shared more than 450,000 times.

The post, which also showed pictures of the girl’s leggings and blanket, had been viewed 24.7 million times by Friday night, said Massachusetts State Trooper Dustin Fitch.

“Please look around July 4th gatherings — block parties, cookouts, town fireworks displays — and consider whether a child whom you would have expected to see there is now not present,” the post said. “Please help us speak for this child who can no longer speak for herself.”
