A man who fired shots at a marked Millis, Massachusetts, police cruiser, causing it to crash and catch fire, remained at large Wednesday night, and schools will be closed Thursday while state and local police look for him, authorities said.

No injuries were reported after a white man driving a red pickup truck fired into the cruiser about 3 p.m. ET, apparently without provocation, state police said. When the Millis officer, who wasn't identified, spun the cruiser in an attempt to avoid the shots, the cruiser left the road, struck a tree and burst into flames.

The officer returned fire as the truck drove off toward the town of Medfield, about three miles away, police said.

Police and fire units in Millis, about 20 miles southwest of Boston, were already out in force at the time after a threatening phone call was made to Millis Middle School, the school confirmed late Wednesday afternoon.

The threat wasn't immediately believed to related, but all Millis public schools were locked down and evacuated, and they'll remain closed Thursday, police and the school district said Wednesday night.
