Denver police had a scare Friday afternoon after a hit-and-run suspect stole a police officer’s unmarked car with a gun inside.

The officer’s gold Chrysler 300 and the weapon were later found but the suspect remains at large, police said. Police said an officer in the unmarked car witnessed a hit and run accident at around 4 p.m. local time (6 p.m. ET) and the driver fled on foot.

"I saw the guy get out of the car and I heard a lady say, 'Hey where are you going,' and then he started running," witness Anna Rodriguez told NBC station KUSA in Denver.

Officers gave chase, also on foot, and the driver circled back around and stole the officer’s car, police said. The police car and the gun were found at around 6:30 p.m., police said.
