A 92-year-old man is recovering in a Florida hospital after two Good Samaritans rescued him from his car, which had veered off the road and was sinking into a pond.

The man, Salvatore Mancuso, was in critical condition at a hospital in Port St. Lucie after Michael Markisello and Alton Brieske broke a window on his car and pulled him out of the vehicle on Wednesday afternoon, according to NBC affiliate WPTV.

"I started shouting, ‘I need a hammer. I need something to break this window so I can get in and pull him out,’" Brieske said.

Markisello added: “I got the seat out of the way for him (Brieske) and he handed him to me and we both brought him up."

Mancuso was unconscious. Brieske performed chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth on him until emergency responders arrived. Mancuso may have experienced a medical emergency before he lost control of his car, police said. The pair had been having lunch nearby when they heard someone shouting and saw a hole in bushes where the car had sped through. They don’t consider themselves heroes.

"I just hope somebody would do it for me," Markisello said.
