A swimming star and recent college graduate drowned during a lifeguard fitness test in Massachusetts over the weekend, according to officials.
Orleans Fire and Rescue told NBC News that Jack Jakubek, 22, went missing on Pilgrim Lake at about 8:49 a.m. Saturday morning during a lifeguard test. He was found around 24 minutes later and taken to a local hospital but could not be revived, Fire and Rescue added.
Jakubek had recently graduated from the State University of New York-Cortland, where he was a record-setting member of the swim team. The school said he was due to serve as a graduate-assistant coach next season while pursuing a master's degree.
"Jack was an outstanding athlete, but he was even more remarkable as a person,” head coach Brian Tobin said in a statement. "His loss is devastating."
State police detectives assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office are investigating his death, NBC New England reported.
