Comedian Joan Rivers was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York on Thursday, according to a statement released by the hospital to NBC News. Her daughter, Melissa, said Thursday night that the TV legend was "resting comfortably."

"I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother," Melissa Rivers said in a statement. "She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."

Mount Sinai earlier confirmed that Rivers was taken to the hospital and said in a statement: "We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available."

Rivers, 81, stopped breathing while having minor throat surgery at Yorkville Endoscopy on the Upper East Side of Manhattan when she was taken to Mount Sinai, according to WNBC, citing sources familiar with the situation. The Fire Department of New York said it transported an 81-year-old woman to Sinai who was in cardiac arrest.

Rivers' grandson, Cooper, and Melissa Rivers flew from Los Angeles to New York on Thursday to be with the comedy legend.

Rivers, known for her gossipy catchphrase "Can we talk?" is a pioneering, potty-mouthed performer who wrings humor from other's misfortunes and her own, not to mention her frequent plastic surgery procedures. She is also an author, playwright, actress, director and red carpet interviewer, most recently at the Video Music Awards on Sunday and the Primetime Emmys on Monday, for which she contributed to E!'s "Fashion Police."
