A college junior died after being shot Thursday night in Savannah State University's student union building.

Christopher Starks, who is from the metro Atlanta area, died at a local hospital, the college said in a statement.

The campus had earlier been locked down "due to a shooting incident."

A reporter for NBC station WSAV spoke with two women who were in the union who said that there was a fight that ended in one person being shot in the collarbone area. The station reported that other students applied pressure to the wound before first responders arrived.

A reporter for the station said students received an email from the university shortly before 10:45 p.m. telling students to "stay in place" and cooperate with law enforcement.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handing the case with the assistance of the SSU Police department.

Savannah State University has about 4,600 students and a campus of more than 200 acres, according to the university's website.
