Roman Gonzalez, 25, was killed during the shooting that occurred just before 4 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET) in a parking lot near a college baseball field, police said. Another person was also wounded and taken to a hospital, and is expected to survive.

Police said investigators believe the shooting occurred after a fight between two groups, and escalated when a knife and a gun were pulled out. Police said the victims and gunman all know each other, NBC tation KCRA reported.

The person who was killed is believed to have been a part of that altercation, police said. The gunman has been described as a Pacific Islander wearing a white T-shirt and beige shorts.

Police said Gonzalez is believed to be a student at the college. A spokesman for Sacramento City College did not return a request for comment Friday.

The shooting prompted the college to be evacuated and the campus to be locked down for several hours Thursday. Classes resumed Friday.

Ridgeway is being held without bail at the Sacramento County Jail, according to jail records.
