Heavy rain caused localized floods that shuttered schools in parts of Massachusetts Thursday, part of a Nor'easter that also left tens of thousands from New Jersey to New England without power. Schools in Peabody, Mass. were ordered closed because of flooding, New England Cable News (NECN) reported. It said fire crews were responding to help three people trapped in a car from flood waters in Lynn, Mass., citing the local fire department.

The storm, which is expected to push north during Thursday and into the Canadian Maritimes on Friday, also brought winds of up to 50mph that left almost 30,000 in darkness in Massachusetts along with 10,000 in Long Island, 4,500 in Connecticut, 3,800 in Maine and 6,000 in Rhode Island, according to utilities.

Half of those in Long Island had power restored within hours, PSE&G told NBC New York late Wednesday. More rain is likely in eastern New York and New England Thursday, the Weather Channel said, with more showery conditions in western New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Strong northeast winds will blow along the Maine, New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts coasts.

Minor coastal flooding and beach erosion are most likely along the Maine, New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts coasts, the Weather Channel said. Lingering rain and showers are forecast for northern New England Friday.
