A 2-year-old Kansas boy was in serious condition Wednesday after doctors removed a small octopus from his throat, authorities said.

The boyfriend of the boy's mom was arrested and held on suspicion of child abuse in the incident Tuesday night in Wichita, according to police records and police sources who spoke to NBC station KSNW.

The boy's 21-year-old mother found her 36-year-old boyfriend about 9:39 p.m. (10:39 p.m. ET) performing CPR on the child, who wasn't breathing, police said.

Police documents say the boy was transported to a hospital, where an "obstruction" was removed from his throat.

Police told KSNW that the object was a small octopus that appeared to be intended for preparation as sushi.

No identities were disclosed because the victim is a juvenile.
