One Dead in Shooting on Kansas City Interstate

The violence follows warnings by police on Friday that a sniper was on the loose and connected to 12 drive-by highway shootings.

Two Hispanic males walked into University of Kansas Hospital at about 3:30 a.m. after they were shot on Interstate 70 near I-635 in Kansas City, Kan., according to a statement by the Kansas City police department.

One of the men “succumbed to his injuries” by the time police arrived at the hospital, the statement said. The identities of the victims have not been released.

Residents in the area have been on high alert after police warned on Friday that 12 shootings on interstates in Kansas City, Mo., had been connected to a serial sniper or snipers, who had not been caught. Kansas City, Mo., is three miles away from Kansas City, Kan., and connected by Interstate 70.

“Our preliminary investigation leads us to believe that this incident is isolated and is not tied to the recent shootings,” Kansas City Police spokesman Thomas Tomasic told NBC News.

Kansas City, Mo., police Chief Darryl Forte wrote in a tweet, “nothing at this point connects [the shooter] to anything in Missouri that I've been made aware of.”

A suspect has not been named in connection with the shooting on Interstate 70, and no arrests have been made, Tomasic said.

Monday's shooting comes on the heels of separate shootings at two Kansas City, Kan., Jewish centers that left three dead on Sunday. The suspect in that attack is in custody and believed to be a former Klu Klux Klan leader.
