A commercial flight bound for Washington, D.C., was diverted to Ohio on Thursday after a passenger made threatening comments on board, an airport spokesman said.

Trans States Airlines Flight 3342, which departed from St. Louis, Missouri, landed in Columbus on Thursday morning. It was met by law enforcement.

Dave Whittaker, a spokesman for Port Columbus International Airport, said the flight diverted there because of reports from the flight crew of an unruly passenger making threatening comments.

The flight, which was operating as United Express, had 50 passengers and three crew aboard, a spokeswoman for Trans States said in a statement.

"The flight landed safety in Columbus, and the passenger was removed by law enforcement personnel," the statement said. "Out of an abundance of caution, the rest of the passengers were removed from the plane and a complete sweep of the aircraft is being done by law enforcement."

The flight left St. Louis just before 10 a.m. ET and landed in Columbus about an hour and fifteen minutes later, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.com.

NBC affiliate WCMH in Ohio reported that the incident delayed some other flights from landing.
