As Hawaii cleaned up from Tropical Storm Iselle, emergency workers were attempting to rescue a sailboat "caught" in Hurricane Julio on Sunday, a Coast Guard statement said. The statement said that the 42-foot boat, Walkabout, was 414 miles northeast of Oahu, where winds were reported to be up to 115 miles per hour and seas were 30 feet. Three people were on board. “One of the hatches has blown and onboard bilge pumps are unable to keep up with the flooding,” the statement said. “The vessel's life raft has also been blown overboard.” A 661-foot container ship diverted from its route and headed toward the sailboat's location late Sunday.
Julio, which was downgraded Saturday night to Category 1, the lowest level hurricane, was passed around 250 miles northeast of Maui on Sunday night. Iselle, initially a hurricane, left the most traveled and populated areas of the state largely unscathed, but toppled trees and power lines when it hit the Big Island early Friday. Thousands of people there remained without power or any idea when it would be restored.
